I’m so perplexed by the fact that someone finds not speaking in public transportation odd.
To sum it up, many Finns dislike speaking with people they don’t know. Why would you speak with strangers since it’s most likely the only time you’ll ever meet them? What would be a subject safe enough to speak? And on the other hand, there’s hard to find subject meaningful enough that speaking about the said subject isn’t waste of time.
Most of people who talk to others in Finnish public transport are either drunk or lonely elderly people (or drunk and lonely). Or non-Finns.
